Today is my 51st birthday. Happy? Some of it has been. It’s been a weird one. A reflective one. And even a bit of a sad one. 51 greets me with a measure of pain and an unknown future like I never could have imagined. But it also ushers in great joy from the good parts.
“Nous prenons le mal pour le bien.” or “We take the bad for the good.” I learned that in Paris earlier this year and I’ve taken it to heart. The bad things that come can be overpowered by the good in my life. Honestly, some of that is the power of positive thinking but mostly, I really do believe it to be true.
Music is a very important part of my life. It always has been. There have been times when Satan has tried to steal my song and there have been times when he was successful – at least for a season. He works hard to steal what we love best. Satan has already taken enough from me. I’m determined to not give him anything else. I’ve got a stubborn streak.
Birthdays are often used for reflection. We look back on what we’ve achieved, not achieved, where we’ve been, where we’re headed – all of that. On my 51st birthday, the one where, if there was doubt before there is no doubt now, I cross the threshold to the second half of my life. It seems fitting to ask the question, “Who am I?” I’ve needed loads of reminders lately.
I thought I’d share some songs with you that I have found to help me remember why God created me and who I am. Some songs that remind me no one can steal my song unless I give them permission to – which I don’t.
In a world where it’s so easy to focus on the negatives, to get trapped by our not-enoughness or our too-muchness, to forget who we are, I think a birthday is a good time for a refresher. But there’s never really a bad time.
