A Prayer for My Missionary Children

Heavenly Father,

My children’s hearts are yours. I know this. You know this. They desire to follow you wherever you lead them.

Lord, you know that when I was a teenager I strongly felt your call to global missions. I sought that path but it never materialized–not in the way I envisioned, anyway. I married and became a mom to our three children. I served my personal mission field as best I knew how through my family, church, and community. Although I was convinced of your calling, the desire of my heart for foreign missions remained a longing unfulfilled.

As teenagers, you made a way for my oldest daughter to go on a mission trip to Kenya. My middle son would make his way there the year after and then a few years later, my youngest daughter would go as well. Then you saw fit to plant seeds of love in my oldest daughter for China. You relocated our family to Asia and then England. With wonder, I watched their hearts grow as they unselfishly shared your love around the world. I clearly see, now, that rather than sending only one of me to the mission field, as I thought was your call, you have made a way to send three of the best parts of me.

In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps. Proverbs 16:9 (NIV)

Father, as my children follow your path for their lives, their marriages, and as they seek your will to raise their own precious missionary children, whether serving at home or abroad, watch over them and protect them. Guide them in wisdom and favor. Bless them, as you blessed Jacob, in who they are becoming and bring them joy as they serve you. Place them on the path that strengthens their feet and leads to your high places–where the best views are. Give them peace when things don’t seem to be working out as they expected. Help them to know that your plan is better. And mostly, Lord, help them to trust you completely and delight themselves in you alone. And as they do this, I pray their steps will so closely follow yours that the desires of their hearts and your path for them are one and the same.

In gratitude for what I believe you will do, I humbly ask this in Jesus’s name.

Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4 NIV

Proverbs 16:9

  1. I love knowing that His ways are not always our ways, nor His thoughts ours. But His way is always good. Reading these stories of how God is providentially at work in the lives of others reminds me to look for ways He is at work in my own life

    Thank you for sharing.
